Uganda and Rwanda - Overseas Adventure Travel tour
June, 2023
Part One - Pre-trip to Uganda
Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by S. Sudan,
to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the southwest by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania.
The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria. As of 2023, it had a population of
about 49.6 million. 8.5 million live in the capital city, Kampala. From 1894, it was ruled as a protectorate by the United
Kingdom. It gained independence on October 9, 1962. Since then, Uganda has been marked by violent conflicts, including
an 8-year, brutal military dictatorship led by Idi Amin. The official language is English, though the Constitution states any
other language may be used. Uganda's current president is Museveni, who took power in January 1986 after a 6-year
guerrilla war. Transparency International has rated Uganda's public sector as one of the most corrupt in the world. It is
one of the poorest nations in the world. People in rural areas depend on farming. In addition to agricultural work, rural
women take care of their families. An average woman spends 9 hours a day on home tasks, so women on average
work longer hours than men, perhaps 12 to 18 hours a day. Men work between 8 and 10 hours a day.
Children spend 7 years in primary school, 6 years in secondary school, and 3 to 5 years in post secondary school.
Primary school is free for all children. Uganda has a literacy rate of almost 67%. In March 2023, the Ugandan
Parliament passed a draconian bill that makes identifying as homosexual punishable by life in prison and provides for
the death penalty for anyone found guilted of "aggravated homosexuality."

One of several warthogs roaming near the tourists alongside the Nile River. It was not far from the baboon in the tree.

Elephants looking for food

An elephant that didn't want our safari vehicle to be on the road. It took a while before the elephant finally moved into the grassland.

It's interesting to see what animals are comfortable being near other animals. It's common for birds to land on animals to eat insects.
